  Unrelenting hardcore-punk party starters 7x0x7 are at it again, bringing you the cult series of intimate musical presentations Frottage, at book cafe and dynamic arts space The Pigeonhole. Number five in the series sees indie folk-pop artists in the form of Jess Locke and Virginia Sook – both hailing from Sydney, Australia – who are touring together in Southeast Asia for the first time. Supported by awe-inducing atmospheric rock band This Is Atlantis (first show in almost a year!), and wistful acoustic trio Penpusher, this installment is a gem not to be missed.

JESS LOCKE

Jess Locke plays simple yet infectious songs that could be folk, country, pop, indie and sometimes even punk. Hailing from the Central Coast of NSW and currently based in the heart of Sydney, she has created several collections of songs including an EP, an album of home-recorded demos and, most recently, a split tape/CD with N. Martin. Jess has been writing and playing solo since around 2006 and can now be found playing with her band all over Australia.

VIRGINIA SOOK
 

Lindsay, also known as Virginia Sook has turned her stripped back acoustic songs into full band arrangements, which brings her on the road for her SE Asia tour with good mate Jess Locke this Feb. Perfect for fans of lovely storytelling and acoustic music.

THIS IS ATLANTIS
 

With a magnificent aptitude for texture and a distinctive blend of both the intricate and organic, Fadzil, Wan G, Sufi and Noor’s chemistry makes them unmistakably This Is Atlantis. Guitar works that complement each other with each own’s unique style, sometimes uniting to deliver strength in a single guitar pattern to give their music trouble free dynamics, edge and that definitively post rock climaxes. Their drummer, quite decisively seems to refuse to give in to the atmospheric soundscapes solely, and chooses to escape by giving those ethereal melodies some little mathy calculative madness. With each member’s unique style, an arguably genuine sound arises.

PENPUSHER
 

Penpusher is quite simply a songwriting unit still in the works. Ave Chan, Brian Leery and Thomas Wu meet up with the intention to perform songs that weave observations of everyday thoughts and emotions. They try to express it all as little soliloquys that seek to take the audience into tiny worlds within tiny universes.

It looks like it's Aussie month this Feb. More than a few of those are being booked and JESS LOCKE and VIRGINIA SOOK (ooh, double bill!) provide additions to the good ol' kangaroo party. 

It's not very often that we see folk/pop DIY bands on our shores, so we're happy for that respite amidst all that raging punk intensity, as we expect something a little more laid-back, a little more wistful, and a lot more folk. We need to chill out from the harsh stuff sometimes!

This is going to be a part of the Frottage series 7x0x7 been doing at the Pigeonhole so look out for details coming your way in the next couple of days.

Unrelenting hardcore-punk party starters 7x0x7 are back after a month's mini-hiatus! This time a solo endeavour, they bring you the return of the cult series of intimate musical presentations Frottage, at book cafe and dynamic arts space The Pigeonhole.

This fourth installment features more heartfelt sincerity, headlined by Australian alt-folk musician WELLS, and supported by local indie singer-songwriter NICK CHIM and voodoo psychedelic prog trip-hop outfit THE PSALMS. 

Beware: there may be an overload of beards.

Featuring touring bands from Belgium/Canada, New Zealand and France and representing a smorgasbord of diverse musical visions from Psychedelic Rock to Folk Soul, these casual encounters are designed to rub off on you in all possible ways.

Less than a month and they're in their 3rd one in the series already. This one sees improv blues guitar wizard ONE LICK LESS (FR), bedroom minimal folk HANGING UP THE MOON (Sean Lam/Concave Scream), and whisky oak soulster LINDA ONG (Lunarin)

[tour] mr sterile Assembly (NZ) SE Asia Tour (July 2011)

A two-piece from Aotearoa New Zealand, mr sterile Assembly have released 4 albums, a book, and have toured in Australia, Eastern Europe, and Southeast Asia (2007). And starting from next week, they're landing on our shores again!

Having been classified as punk, math rock, experimental, noise rock, alt rock and outsider punk, the duo has a distinctive, South Pacific sound based on unusual and urgent time signatures, repetitive heavy rhythms, and angular lyrics. Songs are typically epic, with complex arrangements, and often recount the personal stories behind current or historical events.

mr sterile Assembly are also known for their mercurial nature, and have produced some diverse recordings and events. Most notably, for their recent album, Transit, mr sterile commissioned or was gifted an art work for each song and are currently touring the exhibition in NZ. They recently supported CRASS front man, Steve Ignorant and his band but you could just as easily find them playing a fund raiser on the back of a flatbed truck for a local small town fair.

Over their 10 years, sterile have continuously re-invented themselves with shifting line-ups and collaborations. The current line-up with Kieran Monaghan on drums and Chrissie Butler on bass is reportedly the most assertive and explosive to date.

Catch them here in Singapore on the 28th and 29th July as they play 2 shows; the latter at FROTTAGE: Casual Encounters at The Pigeonhole ii. (a collaboration between 7x0x7 and Ujikaji Records), and the former separately as part of improv sets at Playfreely VI. More details for the 2 events to be out real soon.
